Welcome to Summit Northwest Ministries
Caleb Foss - Young Adults and Service Ministries Pastor Ron Hessel - Senior Pastor Barb Hessel - Administrator Amy Heald - Youth Pastor What fun we had after our Worship Service on January 9. If you weren't there this is how I remember it. I'll leave out some of the names to protect the innocent, and not so innocent.
A few months ago somebody offered $100 if Pastor Caleb would shave his soul patch. Caleb deftly turned that $100 into over $800 by raising the stakes and value of his soul patch. This $800 was then matched by an anonymous donor and Caleb's soul patch raised over $1,600 toward the Building Fund.
Well, last week somebody offered $2,000 if Caleb would cut off his hair. Now those of you who may not know Caleb need to know that he is a good looking man with a good looking set of locks. His pic on this page doesn't do him justice. (I can't believe I was just bragging about how good another guy looks!) Anyway, Caleb decided to raise the stakes again and was on his way to turning that $2,000 into $3,000 when somebody asked if people would pay to have my head shaved. A cheer went up, but when I said that I'd only cut it if we doubled the original $2,000 to make a total of $4,000 it got very quiet. I figured I was off the hook. I explained that they could raise an extra $1,000 and get Caleb's hair cut or it would take an extra $2,000 to get my hair cut.
Again, it was very silent. What with the end of the year just past and everybody had given pretty heavily to take advantage of last year's tax benefits ... my hair was pretty safe.
The money came in slowly to get Caleb's hair cut. $100 here and a $100 there. I thought for a moment we weren't even going to raise enough money to get Caleb's hair cut and we'd lose the original challenge of $2,000, but then somebody offered the last $300 that we needed and we were set. Caleb would get his hair cut and we'd have $3,000 toward the building fund. Not bad for a "day's work."
Just as I was about to step down and get the clippers for Caleb's haircut a hand was raised in the back of the room. A voice called out, "(My wife) will pay $1,000 to get Ron's hair cut." To be honest his wife looked kind of surprised, but she was a good sport and went along with it, even when I 'graciously' tried to give her an out. In one fell swoop I was back on the hook and the hair cutting began.
Observers said that my face turned red at that moment. I'm not surprised. Honestly, I'm not sure what Caleb ended up looking like. We'll have to get some pictures ... but as my hair transformed into a fine rendition of Friar Tuck and then on to cue ball ... I can only say that it was not a sight for weak stomachs.
All in all, we had a hoot. It was a lot of fun and a total of $4,020 was raised to pay toward our land loan. Thank you all for your good support. Be watching for a series of new hair-do's over the next few months. |
